A STRATEGIC LIFE
Well-being has been a central theme of philosophical and intellectual exploration for over 2,500 years. From ancient thinkers to contemporary researchers, the question of how to live well has been considered across cultures and centuries. It is a universal contemplation, as we all seek clarity and direction in the face of life’s complexities. Developing an effective approach to all areas of our lives has been elusive to most. It requires a considerable commitment to self-examination, research, planning, routine, and execution.
Today, this already complex and intensive journey can be easily sidetracked by a perpetual stream of information, notifications, entertainment, and messaging. Hyper-connectivity not only derails us throughout the day but also leads to information and opinion overload. The Mayo Clinic refers to this as "cognitive overload," which can paralyze our decision-making. Technological platforms and social media are subtly fragmenting our focus, making it difficult to maintain prolonged concentration on a single task or goal. Tristan Harris, former Google design ethicist, warns, "The only way these companies can make money is by getting you to consume as much content as possible. That's the business model. The more you consume, the more they can sell." One of the core tenets of well-being in today’s world is the strategic and tactical management of distractions.
